IELTS

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the most widely used English language test. It is recognised as a reliable way of assessing the language ability of candidates who want to work or study in a country where English is used as the language of communication. 

Which test Should you take?

Before you start preparing and even go a head booking your exam, ensure you know what IELTS exam you need to take. The IELTS test you take depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. Ensure you enquire and know from the organizations you are applying to.

1. IELTS Academic Test

It measures whether you have the level of English language proficiency needed for:
1. studying at either undergraduate or postgraduate.

2. Working in a professional organization in an English speaking country.

2. IELTS General Training Test

The IELTS General Training test is suitable for those applying to study below degree level. This includes an English-speaking school or college. It can also be taken for work experience or other employment training. IELTS General Training is also required for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

IELTS Sections

IELTS tests English-language proficiency across four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking

Speaking

One on one interview between candidate and the examiner, It is approximated to be between 12-15 minutes.

Reading

The Reading section consists of 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument and recognising writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose.

Writing

Writing test takes 60 minutes. There are two tasks to complete.
Task 1: Takes about 20 minutes, requires150 words.
Task 2: Takes 40 minutes, requires 250 words.

Listening

The Listening test is the same for both IELTS Academic test and IELTS General Training test. You will need to answer 40 questions in response to four recordings.

Where can I book my IELTS exams?

Booking your IELTS exam can now be easily done online. Click on British Council website, select your respective country, test center, type of test you would like to (Paper based or Computer-delivered) and the available convenient date, then continue the process to create the account, fill in relevant details and finish the booking.

What is the cost of the exam?

IELTS cost varies from country to country. The actual price will be indicated at the time of booking your exams. Currently it will cost you around $290.

How long does IELTS results take to be out?

If you have taken the paper-based test, you will be able to get your results after 13 calendar days from the test date. For computer-delivered test, you will be able to get your results after 3 to 5 working days from the test date.

What is the test format and time taken for the exams

All test takers take the same Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests. Make sure that you prepare for the correct test type.
